How Your Chimney Really Works (or Sometimes Doesn’t)
Your house is a system with constant airflow. Warm air naturally rises and escapes through upper levels (the stack effect), while cooler air enters through lower levels. The point where indoor and outdoor air pressures balance is called the Neutral Pressure Plane (NPP). Above it, air flows out; below it, air is pulled in. The NPP adjusts according to conditions both inside and outside the home.
When fireplaces or fuel-burning appliances are located below the NPP, they can draw air, as well as smoke or odors, back into the house. This often happens in homes with multiple fireplaces on different levels. Modern airtight homes, while energy efficient, make it harder for replacement air to enter, which increases the likelihood of drafting problems.
Wind also impacts chimney performance. Pressure builds on the side of the house hit by the wind and drops on the downwind side. Openings on the windward side can improve chimney draft, while openings on the leeward side can cause backdrafting, where smoke flows into the home instead of out the chimney.
Mechanical systems, such as dryers, kitchen and bathroom fans, attic fans, and leaky forced-air furnaces, can also depressurize the home, competing with chimneys for airflow. Fuel-burning appliances such as furnaces, water heaters, and fireplaces all require significant amounts of air for combustion. Without proper makeup air, pressure imbalances occur.
Chimneys rely on draft, the upward pull created by hot air inside the flue. Draft works like suction in a straw: the hotter and taller the chimney, the stronger the pull (up to a point). Larger flues can move more smoke, while restrictions, like excess creosote, closed dampers, structural damage, or a clogged chimney cap, block airflow, much like a kink in a hose.
A CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep® can diagnose these airflow problems and recommend corrective measures to restore proper draft and flow.
